Adobe Mud Bricks

•    Building material made from earth and organic materials, like clay, dung, pine needles, rice husk and straw.
•    It is an ancient building material dated to before 5,100 B.C and used throughout the world.
•    Construction using Adobe bricks is sustainable and has a low carbon footprint as it does not abuse natural resources.
•    Practical and cost-effective resource in building, due to its easy sourcing, inexpensive cost and no-frills application.

The earth mix is cast in open moulds onto the ground and then left to dry out. Adobe bricks are only sun-dried, not kiln-fired.

Adobe's strength and resilience vary with its water content: too much water weakens the brick.
Adobe bricks are fireproof and durable yet biodegradable and non-toxic. They ensure excellent thermal performance and  low sound transmission. Transfers both heat and cold very slowly which help to maintain a constant interior temperature even when there are large temperature swings outside.
Due to the production process and the nature of clay, adobe bricks have good water resistance.
Although the material itself is naturally unstable, an adobe wall can be load bearing if constructed suitably.
The different textures (finished or unfinished, rough, combed, smoothed and so on), earthy colour and flexibility of this brick are its main selling points
Making adobe bricks is a very labour intensive process compared to traditinal bricks. The drying time for adobe bricks must also be considered with cold and damp months to be avoided for best results.

Adobe construction is susceptible to earthquakes unless reinforced, and hence must be avoided in areas of seismic activity.
