Rubber wood is harvested from rubber trees after the latex production cycle has finished after 25-30years. The trees are then felled and new trees are planted, this makes rubberwood a sustainable source of wood. Most of these trees grow in parts of Asia, Africa, and South America.
Naturally a light blonde to medium tan color, sometimes with medium brown streaks. Easy to work with by hand or machine tool, stains, glues and finishes well.
Naturally has low durability but can last long indoors and outdoors by further treatment with preservatives. Dense grain is easy to control in kiln drying process
Perishable and susceptible to insects and fungal attacks, so it must be treated before use. Not suitable for outdoor use in rainy weather. Tends to wrap and bend while drying causing distortion if not seasoned properly. May trigger an allergic reaction among people allergic to latex or rubber.
