• Fibrous material formed by spinning or drawing molten mineral or rock material.
• It has very good fire resistance, thermal properties, acoustic properties, and water properties.
• Sustainable material as even though made from rocks which causes land degradation, the material itself is recyclable.
• Some companies have developed ways to use construction waste and debris from other industries as alternative raw material.
Properties and Production
Stone wool is a furnace product of molten rock at a temperature of about 1600 °C through which a stream of air or steam is blown. More advanced production techniques are based on spinning molten rock in high-speed spinning heads.
The final product is a mass of fine, intertwined fibres with a typical diameter of 2 to 6 micrometers. Mineral wool may contain a binder, often a terpolymer, and an oil to reduce dusting.
The exceptional thermal, fire and acoustic properties of mineral wool derive from the mat of fibres that prevents the movement of air, and from mineral wool’s inert chemical composition.
It is a very versatile material, and can be manufactured to many different densities to give varying properties, formed in various shapes and faced with a variety of sheet materials.
Stone wool is water repellent yet vapor permeable meaning that the long-term R-value is unaffected by moisture over time
Applications
Applications of mineral wool include thermal insulation (as both structural insulation and pipe insulation) , filtration, soundproofing, and hydroponic growth medium.
Other uses are in resin bonded panels, as filler in compounds for gaskets, in brake pads, in plastics in the automotive industry.
Sustainability
Mineral wool insulation is one of the few building materials that saves energy in use and reduces the need for combustion of fossil fuels to provide energy for the heating or cooling of buildings.
Finished mineral wool products save far more energy in use than is expended in their manufacture.
Depending on the quality and availability of local supplies, recycled content now makes up 30% to 60% of the raw material input in mineral wool production
